Hi,

I'm an artist and planning for an exhibition in June. The area of my interest is historical painting. It would give us a great sense of what a culture valued. And it is the easiest means by which I could convey the important historical moments to the public.

Acrylic paint helps me in my work, as it is extremely versatile. For example, it can be used for a multiplicity of fine art painting styles. Also, like watercolour, it can be applied in the thinnest of glazes. I would like people to know the history as well as painting as an art!

Hope this company offering digital printing in Toronto could help me in promoting the event. Or is there any other effective techniques? Please let me know your suggestions at the earliest. If you are interested in painting, you can help me with your suggestions for the exhibition too.
Oil painting on hardboard.tag:thecompleteartist.ning.com,2017-07-12:2450081:Topic:7827902017-07-12T07:44:02.858ZKelvin Blackhttp://thecompleteartist.ning.com/profile/KelvinBlack

I'm just getting into oil painting although I have painted acrylics before (folk art style mainly), and the odd landscape or two.

I have always painted on board such as MDF or hardboard.

As I have a good supply (free) of hardboard I would like to continue with this.

What is a good way to prepare the hardboard first for oil painting?

Gesso?

Normal 'household' type of undercoat/sealer/primer?

No, No I'm not really a painting heretic (or a Luddite).

Maybe a hangover from painting acrylics on board has given me a liking for the firmer support.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

What is the best method for mounting a canvas on a panel? Has anyone ever tried an acid free spray adhesive? I've used the recommended glues but I tend to get bubbles after it has dried (I use a brayer) plus I tend to make a huge mess. Any suggestions on the kind of panels and adhesive used? Thanks!

I understand notan and was wondering if there was any use to doing a warm/cool hue type sketch? As a rule, I guess that the darks would be cool and the lights would be warm but I'm getting a sense that that may not always be true if you're looking at hue instead of value. Maybe I should consider the warm/cool hue balance and layout in the design.

Now that I've said that, this is a photo of one of the paintings that I am planning and the warm colours are mainly in the dark and middle areas. The sky and water are warm blues but the focus of the picture is the warm trees.

I could make the water and sky cooler and keep the land warmer overall. Maybe I should do some quick sketches to see what happens, but I wanted to know if that is a road that needs to be traveled.

Many thanks for any guidance that you can provide.
Acrylic or Canvas?tag:thecompleteartist.ning.com,2017-02-24:2450081:Topic:7603082017-02-24T05:54:24.172Zjuliehttp://thecompleteartist.ning.com/profile/julie648

I get good results painting on watercolor paper? The question is about presentation, Should I mount on hardboard ( apply gesso to the back of the painting first and then glue it on with PVC glue) then varnish the painting and frame in frame without glass just like an oil painting.

Solution 2. frame like a watercolor in mat and under glass.

Same question for unstreched canvass.

Richard, I have just started working through some of your workshops and was curious to know why you add sky holes to your trees instead of taking the easy way and painting the sky first and then adding in the trees later. I really like the effect this gives your work. Is this just a style preference issue?

I am working through the Chinamen's Bluff workshop and I notice that some of Richard's preliminary sketches are not strictly Notan (light and dark) but include light and medium tone sketching to give a better idea of the overall composition before doing a limited value sketch. I like this idea but was wondering if this kind of defeats the purpose of Notan.
