A brief introduction.

Hi. I have been a member for a short while, and I have been truly enjoying the limited interaction I have had with others on the site. Seeing all your work and reading the comments is so encouraging.

I am a filmmaker living in South Africa. I studied Fine Art at university in the late seventies, but got into film straight out of university. I stopped painting back then, putting my oils away. I have dabbled in acrylics over the last two years, doing some quick paintings, just sketches from fantasy.

A month ago I felt ready to take my oils out of storage. I wasn't sure how to begin, so I googled 'oil painting techniques' and found Richard's incredibly helpful videos. This encouraged me to paint seriously again, and after doing a self-portrait I am totally and absolutely inspired.

I believe in community, especially the community of artists. This is something I have tried to encourage amongst my colleagues over the years.Sometimes this creative journey can be very lonely.

Any help, tips, comments and encouragement will be much appreciated. I will try and help and encourage others where I can.

Hi Michael - welcome! Richard's videos are great....not sure if you plan on doing landscapes, but John Carlson and Edgar Payne's landscape books are excellent resources too. Another great resource is www.wetcanvas.com. All sorts of info on this website....I've used it to research and post questions. Very heavily used site, always can find answers and/or advice and opinions from fellow artists!

Thanks, Steve, for picking up on my brief introduction and for the welcome.

Landscapes have not been my first choice in the past. Having joined the Complete Artist I am just trying out my first real landscape - struggling - and enjoying the challenge. I want to get this first one done so I can try something looser, the style I have seen Richard painting in his videos, actually!

I will definitely check out Wetcanvas. Thanks for the tip.
