Hi Adrienne. I haven't seen Richard's version so I can't comment on whatever white strip he has on his. But to me this looks rather like a mistake. It's not necessary to have all parts of the subject clearly defined against the background. The viewers' eyes and brains will automatically fill in any missing bits (sometimes better than the artist can!). Did you see my picture of "Girl With a Pearl Earring"? See if you can find the edge of her nose on the far side. In fact there's no edge at all, but somehow we imagine the shape of the nose without even thinking about it.

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the white strip should go. Once the background sand takes its place I think the shadow underneath the beak/chin is different enough in colour temperature to do the job.

thank you Rajesh! i really appreciate it!! and thank you Laurence for your feedback. before i posted i noticed that white strip when i did a black and white color analysis and it bothered me but i wasn't sure how to fix it. in richards, he used that white strip to create the shadow of the beak. do i need to blend it more as it moves down the body? or does it need a change in value, perhaps cooler? thank you for you help! it is all part of the learning process.:)

Very nice Adrienne. Have just been looking at your earlier version. Removing the light around the head etc was a good move. Can I just make a couple of suggestions? There is still a white strip under his chest which I feel shouldn't be there and I think the sharp dark lines delineating the feathers could be softened and made a bit less distinct. But overall a very good painting and I love the sand and reflections - really good!

Nice painting Adrienne. Love the soft background and beautifully painted bird.
