Only a few days into winter, and I'm thinking of summer to survive the gloom. My first go with water mixable oil paint.

We don't get that cold winters you do.  No minus degrees.  At night it is about 5 degrees Celsius and during the day 13 degrees Celsius and during our winters (where I live) we get winter rains, so there is some flowers.  But we do have a problem, but mainly with the farmers using insecticides on the crops, so yes they do die out.  But our biggest problem are people that destroy your hives.  They steel your honey and in the process destroy the whole hive.  The black people here make a kind of beer with the larva.  So far I have been lucky that I did not have a big loss yet although they try to steal a hive from me last week.  I don’t know how they do it, because they steal it during the day and carry it by foot.  I don’t know what kind of protection they use, but I got it back and carry my hive back over the hill (with protection) but lost half of my bees in that hive.  That really makes me angry!.  But I think to answer your question, your people in America has a much bigger problem than we have.   Our bees are also a different bee than yours.  You call it the "African killer bee".  They are much more aggressive and stronger I think and produce more honey.  But they are not really that bad.  I walk between my beehives with no protection when I check them out, but yes, I will not open a hive without protection!  But each hive has a different temperament / mood, some are calm and then there is a few that are very aggressive. They are like people.  The nice ones and the moody ones.

Aurelia, are bees in trouble in your part of the world, too?  My hives didn't survive the winter. Actually, they belong to a friend of mine, but he was keeping them in our yard.  I learned from a neighbor, that all the beekeepers in my neighborhood (3 or 4 on my street) lost their bees this winter.  I fear we won't have a good veggie/fruit harvest.  It's very strange to see all the spring blossoms now with no buzzing bees ; (.

A!  What a nice painting.  I am a beekeeper as well and was just visiting all my beehives this weekend to see if they are okay for the upcoming winter.

Thanks, Michael.  That comment helps me feel like it's not just a bad habit.  ; )
