A good technique for seeing color is to not look directly at the subject or stare at it for to long.  Kind of look at the color in the periphery of your vision ..use the outer cones of your eye.  Another way is to constantly compare one section of color to another.  This is a lot easier then seeing color in isolation.  One more thing.  I realize that these are only colored blocks ..but ..... try not to shrug off the other skills that we must master ....for instance .. your drawing ..try not to slack on any discipline just because they are just blocks for color study.  Okay, now I will shut up. :))

I used blue on the shadow side of the yellow block, but clearly not enough to get the correct value. I must say I can SEE the colors & values better when I look at a photo of the set up vs the actual set up. I think I was on the right track with the colors- they don't show as well in the photo of the painting..there's blue on the red top corner. My shadow under the red (on yellow) is wrong..I have it warm rather than cool..don't know if I saw red there or I expected to see red there!!! I do believe I need to spend much more time observing as you suggest, and then odds are, less time fussing with the paint.

Lori, my friend .... careful observation is a must!! ...  look carefully at how the light is affecting the block colors.  Here you have just painted a red, blue, green, and yellow block ....their local colors.  But look closely at the block setup and you will see clearly the beautiful effects the light is doing ro the local color.   Squint to see your values ...study carefully those value relationships that are happening in the set up ..but are not happening in the painting.  Think value and temperature before color.  For example:  The yellow blocks shadowed side is cool and quite a lot darker then the top.  Also, note the warm reflected light on the yellow block where the red block sits against it.  Note the cool reflection beneath that.  Note the cool reflected light on the upper edge of the red block.

Thanks! Yes Silvana...good therapy!! The assignment calls for 100 block studies over a year..should be outside in different light..bright sunlight to overcast..to see the affects on the colors. It's 20 degrees outside, so I will remain indoors for now!!
