Oil on 140-lb. Cold-pressed Watercolor Paper - 6" x 6" - I decided to do a pear painting after having done the four challenges of Workshop 5 to see what the result would be and to apply what I learned in the workshop. That's why I titled the painting "Challenge No. 5."

Otto it's delicious. Strong design and values, loose controlled brushwork and variation in edges, rich colour harmony and temperature contrast...fascinating how the warm dark red of the background appears to recede more than the cooler deep blue...or does it? Maybe something to do with the angle of the base creating a sense of distance?...what's going on there then...?

I have used both gesso and just the 140lb. and seem to like without gesso. I'll be doing more of that , I have done without gesso to save time.

I'm going to try that. Less prep time too.

Rosie, Nancy, Richard & Dirk,

Thanks for your positive comment.

Rosie, If I mount it, it'll be to a prepared wood board using book binder's glue.

Nancy, No gesso, cuz I like the absorbency of the 140-lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Best to All,

Otto

Really beautiful painting. When I paint in oil or acrylic on watercolor paper, I usually Gesso it first. Is that what you did here?
