If I was using a hard wood to carve I would but the wood I use would not look good stained or just sealed. I us a some what soft wood to retain all of the detail that I put into them. I water the paints down to around 80% water and do several washes to get the colors right.

That is a gorgeous piece!  I admire your patience! The look of the wood is so lovely!  Have you considered staining instead of painting?

Thanks for asking Britt. Here is the wood duck I am working on all burned and ready to paint. I have a good 120 hours into it at this point.

John, have you left any of them unpainted? I think the unpainted look really helps people appreciate the master carving and know that it isn't something resin made in China.
