What a fantastic discussion...that last quote is going to be my new mantra...and what WILL I do? I admire your tenacity Thomas..you're out there painting and clearly growing as an artist. I complain I need more time to paint, but really I need to MAKE more time to paint. You are and it shows in your work..you compare yourself to others ...I'd say you are that to others (at least me).. I am inspired by your dedication and your paintings:)

Yep! Making dreams come true takes effort. No pain, no gain! No paint on the canvas= no painting!!!

Stu, i agree and it reminds me of this sentence read:
Success in life depends not on what we can do but on what we will do.

I would agree with that Thomas, but I would argue that some will never demonstrate their talent because of other defects either mental or physical that they are born with. I do think support of artistic expression by parents and teachers during childhood is incredibly important in later expression of artistic talent In adults.

Thanks for your comments everone! And for thet frog :-)

Silvana, i think nobody has the capacity to reach excellence with little effort. To me talent means just the potential to learn something. It's just a starting fundament.

Loved to read the discussion around here.... Personally... painting makes me feel good... as teaching is... and Stu you are absolutely right there... It's undercompensated and underappreciated...and there is no greater recognition than meeting an ex student down the street that recognizes you and says 'what you have taught me was of great use when getting into medicine'... just a comment like that one makes me happy for over a long period of time...

What I see is that making a living from art, or teaching is not easy anywhere in the world...BTW... I had to look for C Miano to see who he was....apparently he is very well known!

Jon, it would be great to be able to make a living from painting... I wonder how many people are able to do that...

Hope you had  a great painting day Stu!!

Thomas, super paintings! You are obviously an extremely hard worker!!! And you are an excellent painter! It's always a pleasure to look at your uploaded work... I think that talent is God given and acquired... I think that talent is the capacity of somebody to reach excellence with very little effort... but with effort one can reach that level of excellence too... my question is... can effort and hard work be considered a kind of 'talent'?

OK, Stu! - have a good session - envy you

Thomas - sure, of course - my idea was more that anyone can follow their dreams/express themself - nother wrong with earning a living from doing something you love - great thing to be able to do!

OK guys, BS is, of course bullshit, and Jon is right that it is the norm and probably necessary these days to differentiate oneself from the others by way of embellishment.  Talent is not god given but rather acquired by a lot of hard work as should be fame, wealth and eminence.  One should be happy in their art if others enjoy it and praise it, but obviously the ultimate praise is when someone likes an artist's work so much that they are willing to spend their hard earned money to acquire it.  There is no sin in trying to make a reasonable living doing something that you are both adept at and enjoy doing.  I certainly have been blessed with that in my surgical career.  Teaching is another fulfilling venture that is often undercompensated and underappreciated and it is not a sin when a teacher achieves recognition for their teaching.  Well, enough philosophy for now because I am off to paint with my plein air group today and the weather here is just perfect for that!!!
