i really like this painting.it must be a place close to your heart. i really like that reflected light in the trees and your foliage. i felt there was something off and couldn't put my finger on it, then i read the comments. i can't wait to see what the final painting looks like adjusted. id love to learn from it. good job!

Really inviting composition Jan, and lovely palette! Will look forward to seeing it tweaked, to perfection,  per Michael's suggestions!

Hi Jan.  Good photo ... now do you notice how the shadowed upright planes of the small building and the foreground structure are the same value as your shadow values on the road? ...  it is best not to have 2 planes the same value.  Also, please note the sunlit roof of the church? .. you actually painted it a darker value then the shadow sides of the buildings and the shadow across the road ... that cannot be ...  anything in the light cannot be darker then anything in the shadows.  Now, take a close look at the space between those two small houses in front of the tower ... do you see how light the shadowed value is compared to the facade of the other house? The small house on the left (the one in front of the tower) is the correct value .. the house next to it is not .. I am referring to only the shadow values.  Anyway, Jan, when I do suggest something or make a technical comment, I always like to tell ... why!!!!  ...  there is always a reason for something happening.   These are not etched in stone, however, but ... us students should probably follow the "rules" until we know why we are breaking them. :))  Good discussion and great painting .. just do those few tweaks I suggested and you will see the difference.

Michael this is the B&W from my painting. I appreciate this technical comments very much.

A good way to judge those value relationships is to remember that upright planes are usually darker than flat planes or slanted planes .. in your case, those shadows across the road .. the flat plane .. are your lightest darks, the trees and shadowed facades would be among your darkest darks .. being upright planes.  Photographs fail to show this relationship .. especially if the local color in shadow is a high value ... so we as artists must be "on our toes" and concentrate on painting the illusion of light ...

Hi Jan.  This is a very fine painting, my friend!!  I really get a sense of place .. very nice.  May I suggest two things that would improve on your already excellent painting.  First,  darken the shadow side wall of the little pink house .. to a value as dark as you have on the shadow side of the stone and church. Secondly, darken the wall on that first house on the left, but leave the roof alone .. just maybe throw some cool sky light on it.  That's it!  These tweaks will give you a better illusion of light and shadow.  A lovely painting.
