Could go on adding detail forever & making changes; decided it was time to call it a day! This was a challenge....cars aren't so easy! Based on a photo I took on a visit to San Francisco some years ago.

Hi Jessica.  Talking about relationships again.  Your trolly relates to its surroundings because the light values of the trolly are within the range of the lights surrounding it ..warm areas, cool areas, but all withing the same value!!  Now, look at your white van in the shadow. It does not relate because it is too steps up in value from where it sits in that dark value.  It must be close in value to the dark to relate.  It will still read as a white van, but will look more real because it will relate to where it is standing.  So here is the "Rule" :  The lightest thing in the darks cannot be lighter then the darkest thing in the lights.  Your white van in shadow is actually brighter then the autos and trolley ..which are in the light.  It is okay to break rules ...but not this one.  The great Spanish impressionist,  Juaquin Sorolla (I know I misspelled his name terribly)  said that, not me.

Thanks for your nice comments, Silvana!  I thought your cars were great, by the way, I think you have mastered that!  Maybe we'll get to enjoy painting them if we keep at it! :-)

LOL!!! Yes You have! And your cars are excellent! I find myself looking at the cars!!! They are VERY difficult... that is the way I see it too... Like your trees a lot and the trolley too. I can see you have put special effort in those cars too! Liked the addition of the lady!

Thank you very much, Stu & Laura; I appreciate your comments very much!  Stu - I look forward to seeing your photo; it is tricky to know when to stop putting in details - it's actually quite fun to do!  And Laura, I'm glad you can see that the street is on a slope; I was trying to show that & wasn't sure I accomplished it.

I really agree with others. This is incredible nice painting. I can see this is a up-down street.

Very good work Jessica.   Your cars look fine; added detail in the cars would detract from your cable car whick is very well done.  My second painting is from another photo you took and I will post it in the next couple of days; I am less able than you to avoid putting in a lot of detail, so I am not quite finished.   Your shadows came out nicely.  Stu

Jessica, I agree, I don't like painting cars but the trolley was fun. Great painting, I think your cars look good

Thank you for your very encouraging comment, Manneherrin!   This painting took me a VERY long time to do!  I learned something here - I don't like painting cars!!  Trolleys are fine though!
