Thanks Michael, for the explanation. Thanks Aurelia for initializing the discussion. That the shapes are all unequal was mere luck. I did consider composition by positioning the tree off center ;-)

One last question i have on dominant value. The painting doesn't have one. The coursly modified one (artrage software) does.

Is composition better, same or worse?

Interesting discussion.  Actually the bridge line sits just about on the "Golden Section" ..which is ideal.  I kind of like elements that "challenge" the center anyway ...always gives a little tension.  Even if the bridge line was at the exact center, like Thomas notes, the line is broken with varied sized shapes. .....anyway, SOMETHING has got to be in the middle.  The rule is more about avoiding EQUAL divisions of space, then it is with something being in the middle.   BTW, I really like how you have every major shape a different size ..good job Thomas.

Aurelia, wow... Thanks a lot for your help trying to evaluate this. Thanks for the hint how to include a photo!

I wonder how these contour plots were generated, because they do not really correspond to the values of the painting. For instance... In 2 value notan the path in shadow (low left corner) appears brighter than the grass in front of the tree. In the painting it is the other way around.

I think Michael have to answer you on the bridge line as he is by far more experience than any of us. Dominant value: (to add a photo press the button on the toolbar next to the "LINK". The toolbar sits just on the top of this screen where you add a comment)

2 Value Notan and 3 Value Notan:

Aurelia, thanks for the comment! I have been thinking...
The position of the horizontal bright line lies at 58% in respect of the height of the painting. That might not be ideal. On the other hand this line does not strech across the whole canvas and is also interrupted. Further there is no major color jump across this line and with respect to value pattern sky and river from two large areas. In my opinion there is no problem with dividing into 2 halfes.
For me the most bothering question is: what is the dominent value of this painting?

I comment again.  I though the comments immediately go to your inbox when you press "add comment".  I like this one too.  Nice atmospheric perspective and I like your foreground greens and the way you add a little bit of the complementary red here and there.  I also like your eye path how you lead us into the painting.  Nice job.  But composition wise:  rule of 3rds.  The line of the bridge divide the canvas in two almost equal size.
