Hi Olivia.  Mother Nature requires help sometimes when it comes to composition.  Your nice tonal values are part of that composition.  Little things like the Foxglove on the lower right curves into the picture ..leading us in that direction ..you have everything leading into the focal area, the right bank of leaves in which you have masterfully blurred the area near the edge of the canvas, the in focus hard edges of the front leaves, ...and much more ..you did all of that!!!  About the white flowers:  I don't know, it was just a passing thought I had and wanted you to look at it.  I know what you are saying about not wanting to take something out that is beautifully painted!! ..been there, done that a lot! :)

Wow, just a wonderful painting, Olivia!  The foliage is completely convincing & the delicate colour in the foreground is so beautiful.

Thank you Cristina and Rose.

Once again Michael thank you so much for your input.

You see so much and are thinking of so many things I hadnt really considered.Being largely self taught I am learning a lot since joining this site.Trouble is even though I make plans before I start once I begin I find it hard to keep them in mind.

I did think to blue the background foliage more to distance it and used more yellow coming forward.

I moved the foxglove to a better position as my focal point and made the smaller one on the right point in instead of out and curved the river a bit but beyond that anything right about the composition was due to mother nature rather  than me.

You are right about the white flowers. I had already glazed them back. But they really should go.

Trouble is I am so reluctant to omit something pretty that catches my eye even when I know I should.!

Your compositions are always so pleasing to look at Olivia.  Your tonal values are so well painted ..wow!   You know, Olivia, I am thinking that those white flowers,  between the two lilac flowers, might be commanding too much attention ..I assume that the lilac flower on the upper left is the focal point?  ...just a thought.  Beautiful painting! :)  For those who like to study composition, this is an "S" composition with a steelyard and radiating line  influence.  Hope you don't mind me throwing that out to everyone Olivia?
