Loved the play of sunlight through the arches of the old city of Akko on the ancient stone walls & cobblestones

Hi Sara - thanks for your comments!  I love arches!  I did redo this one using Michael's advice; it's in my 'gallery'.  My husband was just in Tuscany & came back with some lovely photos from the beautiful old towns - it must be wonderful to paint them.

Arches are difficult Jessica. My landscape is riddled with them and I have tried to paint them in the past. I would agree with Michael that more shading but leave the light alone. You have done a great job capturing the maze of arches and the light shining down.

Thanks a lot  for the suggestion Michael - good idea.  Was wondering if I'd made the shadows dark enough.  I'll give it a try & repost.....   Was painting from a photo I took that had very high contrast between dark & light so it was a bit tricky to get it right!

Hi Jessica ...... A tunnel composition ..excellent!  I would suggest that you begin to slowly glaze a darker color on the shadowed walls and floor of the arch (but not the shaft of light).  Make it much darker at the edges and gradate toward the entrance   You will see a nice transformation in your painting as the sunlight will emerge through the portal with all its glory!!  Wait for your painting to completely dry before glazing and wait for it to dry before each subsequent application.  You can daub into the glaze for nice effects, or wipe it off if you do not like it ... so it is pretty safe to try.   If you decide to do this, please repost your painting ... I would love to see it!
