:-) Good on you. I love that turquoise colour in the water too - it really was amazing and as we stood on the cliff top we saw a big stingray fly past in the shallows - just stunning. Looking forward to seeing your finished painting.

Richard, I liked your first photo when you originally posted it, but what drew me to the scene was the beautiful turquoise water and I decided to make a portrait of it.  I am almost finished with the painting and added a sailboat to fill in the the upper right hand area and put some motion in the water in the foreground.  We will see what the reaction to it is.  Thank you for your input though.  I rarely paint in the portrait format (my recent post "Morning Ritual" is an exception) and decided to give it a try.  I have not broken out of my usual style, although it is not as soft as the last two competition paintings.  I think I am going to put some of those red seasonal flowers in the tree that I just saw in two of the Kiwi artists posts (Hazel and Annie) but I'm going to learn a little more about them first.  I should have the painting posted this weekend; I will welcome any comments you have.   Stu

Hi Stu, I love the work you're doing here but I've got to be honest with you I don't think this design is an improvement on the photograph - for me it's excluded most of the landscape that drew me to the scene in the first place. That's just my one opinion though and you've got to paint what draws you to the scene. So perhaps it's a worthless comment. Just check yourself to see if you're saying here what you love about the scene.

Hi Stu, I agree with Karlo in that I like the simple notan also...  Yikes, I am still trying to figure out my own NOTAN!!  :)))

• Thanks Karlo.  I'm just finishing up my underpainting and I plan to have a lot more color variation in my final painting than  you see in my little study; it will be pretty much like you describe with more vibrant and warm color in the foreground water with a progression to cooler and grayer water in the distance.   My intention is to try and make the water shimmer with some warm/cool shifts.   We'll see if it comes out like I envision it.   Stu

Hi Stu, I like this simple notam. Nice feeling of light in color study - who knows how would be to see even more change from foreground to background (foreground more greeneesh.. and background more grey-bluish..). But must say that it is nice also like it is.
