Sometimes simplifying is a good idea. At least it allows you to tackle something that you might otherwise not have tried to paint. Plus it's a good learning experience too. :-)
Your watercolors are inspiring, so I can't wait for you to get back into oils. I'm sure you'll bring a fresh eye to an old medium. The lake will be a good choice. It's rich and dense, and a lot of opportunity to work with the deep contrasts that you like and lots of hard and lost edges. Go for it!
I'll keep my open.
Thanks for your encouraging comments on my stuff, too. Maybe I'll paint another Smoker, for those of you who feel marginalized by the holier than thou non-smokers everywhere :-)
I used to smoke. Funny, when I cracked open my old oils after decades away, and the smell hit me, the first thing that I wanted to do was light a cigarette. I resisted. Old habits die hard...
Thanks for the info, Jen. Your watercolor work is just fabulous in my opinion. I mainly work in oils and have never tried to master watercolors, so my infrequent attempts are usually frustrating. I really like your compositions and the tonality of your paintings. Stu
It's good to make contact with other artists on this site. I really like your work. I remember someone saying that we often struggle getting our values right because our darks aren't dark enough. So true. I struggle with that too. And looking around here, maybe we should invite some of the others over to the "dark side" :-)
Hi Jen. Yes, I know what you refer too!!!! and please call me Michael. I am sitting here looking at your paintings scroll across the screen ....just beautiful!!!
Yes, someday I want to give watercolors a try. Got to conquer oil painting first...so much to learn. We don't have a lot of watercolor painters on this site so I'm glad you've joined our workshops!
