Oh my. That is an impossible question for me. John Singer Sargent, Frieda Kahlo, Thomas Hart Benton, Malcolm Liepke's earlier work, Edward Hopper, Vincent Van Gogh...

Do you have any goals for your painting?

To connect with my subject and lay down strokes in a way that makes me feel good while I'm painting and transmits that feeling to the viewer. I've been an illustrator for 35 years and the industry took us away from painting and demanded digital work. I need to just plain re-learn what real brushes and paint feel like, get my tools under control and become a flawless technician so I can then forget about it and have fun with the process instead of spending my time wrestling with the media. Water based soluble oils have finally evolved to a point I'm satisfied with so I've switched over to Winsor Newton Artisan so I can quit breathing turpentine fumes. Easier for taking out in the field also. Took my new OpenBox-M setup into the San Juan mountains yesterday for my first major plein air attempt. Ha!!! Got stung by a bee, chased the dog, baked in the sun and then froze when it went down and was utterly paralyzed by all of the choices in front of me. So, the illustrator and ex-college art teacher has now become the student. I have some weak areas I've recognized that never got addressed in my years of focusing on just making a living. "Starting over am I!" I'm incredibly glad to have given up my computer and wacom tablet for a brush again. I ended up with blue paint in my hair yesterday and I was a total disaster but you know what...your hands don't smell good at the end of the day when you've been doing 'art?' on a computer. "I love the smell of oil paint in the morning...." Ha! (I think that was from a movie ;)" Also, an aside. I used to live in Melbourne and spent my summers living in Onewhero near Tuakau in the North Island. Hung with some of the McLaren racing team in NZ and worked at Ford Motor Design in Geelong in Australia. That was years ago. Love your part of the world. Haven't made it back. Now live in Durango, Colorado, USA. Have been enjoying your daily email lessons.
