background for Animal Portraits

Posted on February 25, 2013 at 13:27 3 Comments

I have been doing dog portraits.  I am doing them from photograph.  This one, the person wants the chair to be the same color it is, but it is woven cloth and a few colors combined.  I don't want it to overpower the dog with the design in the chair.  I am thinking to leave it as it is, or to make the swirls an off-white.  Also, the background color I am having trouble with.  I know I should incorporate some chair color into the dog's shadows? to harmonize? But darker?  Hence, warm dog, cool…

Large Painting

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 14:01 91 Comments

I am about to undertake a large painting in oil.  It is 4 ft by 2 ft horizontal.  I want to paint Mount Rainier in Washington.  The mountain is off to the right, not taking up the whole painting.  Any suggestions how to go about this?  I have printed out some photos and taped them together so far.

Hello Sharon,  Scratch art I guess has been around in one form or another for quite sometime, but I was only made aware of it the end of Sept this past year.  We were on a 3 week trip to the UK, two weeks guided tour, one week on our own in a rental car.  Met an artist I had met on one of these art sites and she introduced me to scratch art.  You start with a piece of 1/8th inch masonite that has a layer of white clay applied and then a layer of India ink over the white clay.   Using sharp tools you scratch away (etch) the black exposing the white.  You develop the picture with various scratches.  I apply a light wash of watercolor and then scratch again and repeat until I achieve what I want.  Usually 3-4 scratches and 2-3 w/c washes.  Last scratch puts in the highlights.  I did a a 3 e-mail series of various steps, from first scratch to finished work.  I would be happy to send to you if you are interested..   It's not a fast process, but the results can be quite dramatic.  I am now doing Pet Portraits in two sizes.   Having a grand time..  Chuck :)  XX

Yes I think they don't all paint and don't all pay for each month - just join in when I they want to.

Thank you very much Sharon, for accepting my invitation! No my profile picture is not a picture of me, all though is so close as when I was a child even the scarf, it is a copy I made after one of the Romanian master, Nicolae Grigorescu. A friend of mine commissioned it about eight years ago. Thank you again for accepting my friendship and for asking. Cheers, Ana
