"Pounders" 10x20" Oil on Canvas by Richard Robinson
Hi guys, yesterday I relearned a good lesson about cropping a scene. There I was with my blank canvas in front of an expansive Hawaiian scene - a gorgeous surf beach backed by towering ranks of volcanic mountains. My eye was drawn to the surf crashing against the rocks, but I just love painting distant mountains. I had to choose to either paint the whole scene, mountains and all, or zoom in on the rocks and focus on the surf. It was a very hard decision to make but in the end I decided to go with my gut and zoom in on the subject that most captured my attention. The decision was also helped to some degree by the size of my canvas which was fairly small at 10x20". A larger canvas would probably have enticed me to paint the whole scene.

Love it! Which beach/island is this? I can't wait to get back to Hawaii, and to get time to paint period! Aloha!
Diane Boucher, I agree with you, the work Ricards producing is great. He must be inspired because they are coming thick and fast. Whats next.
I am in awe of the colour and vibracy you are bringing back into your work.Just loving all the work you are producing in Hawaii
Great painting Richard! I can see how the choice would have been hard for the larger view is also very beautiful. Maybe you can come back and paint it as well.
The waves and beach look real. Nice job! The little guy on the tip of the rock with the big crashing wave adds excitement, drama and mystery, Wonder why he is there and what is he thinking about? Love the violet....it's a very nice painting!
Great idea, worth keeping in mind. Fantastic work. love it.
Zooming in was the perfect decision Richard. Your painting is beautiful! George
Fabulous piece of work Richard! I can feel the power behind that wave and noise as it crashes into the rocks. It highlights the vulnerability of the person standing on the edge of the rock. Wow! :)
