I have been reading both book and web material about Art Marketing. There seems two be two threads, to become Galleried or to sell on the web. Is it not possible to do both?

Most of the galleries I've spoken to would rather me not have a website and would rather them be the exclusive gallery, which is all good for them but far to limiting for the artist. Yes the prices need to be the same, but just talk to your gallery and see how they feel about it websites and private selling etc.

If they see it online... I was meaning if the painting is on your website but currently hanging in a gallery, you need to have that clear with the gallery what your standard operating procedure is in that case.

I thought if the prices were exactly the same, it wouldn't matter! If a client saw it in a gallery and tried to wait, hoping to get it directly for a cheaper price, they would be disappointed. The price would be the same and if I learned they saw it in the gallery first, I would give the gallery their commision. If they see it on line though, then I have no one to give commission to.

Yes it is possible, but the galleries don't like it of course. You need to have a good open relationship with your galleries so be clear with them that if they have your painting hanging in their gallery that someone wants a look at because they saw it on your website that you will send those clients in their direction. Galleries need to get paid for the work they do. Also be clear that the gallery should send people to you for a chat if they're interested, or to see your latest work and that the gallery will still get commission on any sales from those referrals. So yes you can have your cake and eat it too but you need to share your cake with your galleries.
