This is an old post I wrote on my blog What Are We Doing? It refers to artists in the generic sense - ie musicians, dancers, etc.
Part of being a good artist is being able to be emotionally honest in our work. Of course this means we need to be that way in the rest of our life so that we become skilled at being true to ourselves. Then our art has a better chance of touching someone else in a meaningful way. The more authentic we are the better chance we have of striking a chord in another. Then our art becomes a vehicle of expression for not just ourselves, but for those that view/experience it.
