I am about to undertake a large painting in oil.  It is 4 ft by 2 ft horizontal.  I want to paint Mount Rainier in Washington.  The mountain is off to the right, not taking up the whole painting.  Any suggestions how to go about this?  I have printed out some photos and taped them together so far.

Sharon, this really turned out well.  Keep us informed as to whether someone buys it.  Looking forward to your next large painting (if you have the energy again).  Stu

I really do appreciate all your suggestions, Stu and Karlo!

OK, this is it!  I do believe this painting has run it's course, and run it well.  I'm taking it to that store in Boston and hopefully someone will buy it (or at least love it!)  I appreciate all comments, thanks!

Sharon, 40% commission is not unreasonable, if they move your paintings and give you more exposure.  I know artists who do not want to sell certain pieces because they have emotional attachment to them.  My philosophy is: "I painted it once; I can paint it again and improve it even more!  Unless it is a painting of a family member that I am keeping for a special memory, it is always for sale at the right price.  Then, I am motivated to start painting again to keep up my inventory.  There is nothing more flattering to an artist than someone liking their work well enough to pay for it with money they have had to work hard to make.  Sign up with the store on a trial basis; if it doesn't work, so be it.  You have probably run out of wall space at home anyway; now a lot of other people will see what a good painter you are.   Stu

Hey this sounds great Sharon. Selling is definitely good motivation for more works..

Hey, I have a chance to sell my paintings in a store, but they want 40 percent!  But, on the other hand, I would like to make room in my studio for more newer ones.  I could have an art show in July... I just can't get enough of painting and learning.  I want to be good as you guys and Richard one day.

Sharon, this painting has really come together. I agree with Karlo in giving it a couple of days and coming back with fresh eyes to give it another look. The orange part of the sky bothers me a little also and I would definitely work on that using Karlo's suggestions. You are doing a great job on this painting. Stu
