Hi guys, spent a couple of hours making a short demo video today in preparation for the next online painting workshop and I just really enjoyed pottering around with the paints on this one so I thought I'd pop it up here on the blog because the video didn't really capture the colors as well as I would have liked (had a wee setting wrong on the camera). In the video I'm basically just showing how I paint a glowing light source going from cool gray darks to warm saturated lights in a circular fashion around the light. Nice effect eh?

Hope you're having fun. Catch you later,

Richard.

Thanks Carol yes I do talk about brushwork in my videos. Basically I just try to keep it varied and let my brushstrokes show - not smoothing them out. Everyone has a different way of making marks so I think of each brushstroke as my signature or fingerprint - unique. I also like to find the most efficient way to paint a subject - its form and texture in as few strokes as I can manage it so the subject often suggests the type of brushstroke to use.

Ricahard,

I have watched your videos until I have the desire to take guitar lessons but I have never seen from you, or any other teacher, discussions on brush work.   Do you ever discuss that in any of your videos?  I absolutely love to just look at your work-anything you do. After all is said and done the brushwork is what sets your work  apart. It is beautiful.

Yeah I feel the same way about my brush when I look at work the likes of Richard Schmid.

I enjoyed this light effect, and will incorporate in my painting if I can.  My problem is, I paint with a fury, I plan, but when I start, watch out, the brushes go, and the paint flies.  If I paint to calculated my painting seems contrived.  Anybody else with that passionate brush out there, it gets me into trouble.

Very nice -  it looks easy enough, can't wait to get started on my painting.  I plan on having all day friday to do it.
