Painting the Beach

Old Version - 2004

Painted this commission today. It's a redo of a scene I've painted a few times - one of my favourite beaches around here - Mangawhai Beach about 20 minute's drive. Redoing older work gives you the chance to experiment with or refine different aspects of a painting - brushwork, colour, value relationships - all of which I worked on in this one. Below it is the older version the client liked so much. He did want practically the same painting, so I had as much fun as I could without leaving the concept. Enjoyed it anyway, and that's the main thing.

The color and brushwork on the newer one almost makes you taste the salt air and hear the pounding surf while the previous version is so peaceful and natural. The sand in the original version looks so truly wet - brilliant! Thanks for sharing.

I can definitely see the Quang Ho influence in this one. The soft edges and bold brush strokes really add a painterly feel to the new one. Love you work and am looking forward to receiving your masters DVD soon.
