I painted this in 3 hours at a life session.I was standing right in front of the model, hence the title. A little offputting at the beginning.
I'd love to get your comments and critiques.
It's in oil on 16x12 in, 40x30 cm canvas.

Thanks Michael for your explanation and i understand your point.
This guy is staring at me and makes me nervous after a while. I figured that i can nicely avoid eye contact and rest my eyes on the yellow side of the background ;-)

Many thanks, Thomas. Yes, I can see why you're saying that. The counter argument is that the eyes in a portrait are normally the focal point, so that the background is less important and if anything it becomes a secondary focal point. Also I quite like the idea that the background works with the foreground, so the background on the right echoes the T-shirt. Just my opinion of course and this is not to denigrate what you are saying.
Thanks for making your point.

Hi Michael, great work on the face. Expressive amd very believable to me.
Just a minor comment: the background on the right is fairly inhomogeneous and takes some attention away from the face.

Thank you , Britt, for your observations. I painted him from life and it's not permitted to take a photo of the model. For the values, it's difficult to be sure. I did a value assessment after the initial drawing to work out the values and flatten the range.

Michael, it's very powerful!  I think your values may be a little off...it's hard to judge, (but I know it's scary to post) without a reference photo.  That is the only way we know if you caught the likeness.....if that is the goal.

Hi Michael , this is a very powerful image , great colour and brush strokes , but seems angry or mean spirited?

Gripping !!
