Hi all. I've been a member for awhile, but, being pretty busy in a number of realms, have checked in only now and then, and haven't formally introduced myself here.  Some of you already know me from other sites.  I work primarily in watercolor but dabble in other mediums, too.  I got serious about painting about 10 years ago and have been absorbing everything I could about it since then.  Turning tables, I find it difficult not to pass along what I've learned, so please forgive me if I sound like a know-it-all at times.  (I'm not really, and am always open to constructive feedback.)

Hi, Charlotte! Welcome. I'm glad to see you here. Jon

Thanks, Jon!

Hi Charlotte, I just signed onto this site as well as a member of VAA.. I love reading you knowledge of painting you have contributed on that site.... Learning from others is great... I found this site cause Barry and Richard both have a wonderful wealth of knowledge of painting I want to learn.. I purchase Richards dvd on color mastering... Cause I thought I could always learn more....looking forward to the assignments.. I am trying to learn Barry's alle Primma assignment currently... Each day I learn more... I have tried a few times without success.... I think I pick a complex scene...so keep trying again...so need to a few notans to get it right...

Glad to see you on this sight
Cindy

Hi, Cindy.  Nice to see you here.  I agree that both these sites offer a wealth of information, and I'm sure the other artists on both sites have much to contribute in the way of critiques and insights.  And, like you, there's always some skill to work on to gear us up for greater success.  One of the interesting things I've found is that the more we participate through critical thinking and providing feedback for others, the more benefit we get out of it ourselves.  I love to "spread the wealth" that way.  See you around!

Hi Charlotte welcome, good to see you.

Thanks, Christine.  I'm finding all kinds of friends here!

Hi Charlotte,  I didn't know you were on this site as well.  Cindy told me.  You are so helpful all the time.  Glad to be on here with you. Did you do the color course?? What did you think? Would love to here your comments... Richard is doing a workshop in San Francisco soon and I could go. What do you think? I always put to much on my plate.  Kevin Mcpherson is also doing a workshop in June I was thinking about taking that too.  LOL!! Seems the only time I paint is at a workshop.

Hi, Rhonda.  I haven't taken Richard's color course.  Actually, I think he's a VAA graduate himself, if I remember correctly.  My color training came directly from VAA, which is designed really well for a consistent, step-by-step progression through the course. I pick up reminders from Richard, and like to stay in touch with old friends here for the sake of critiques, but VAA is still my primary educational source.

Any time you can get coaching from a good teacher, it's good to take advantage of it.  But it won't take the place of doing your own practice work.  And all of us need a LOT of practice to move from one stage to the next.  So if it's a choice of attending yet another workshop or actually practicing what you have just been hoping to "absorb through osmosis" (wouldn't it be lovely?), you already know the answer.

I'll be attending the portraiture workshop at Barry's studio this spring and just wish I could stay for the plein air one, too.  But since I work almost entirely in the studio instead of in plein air, it wouldn't pay off as much for me (aside from the fact that we'll need to get back home before then).  It's also geared more toward the oil process than toward watercolor, which is my primary medium.  So, all things considered, I'll do better getting back to work on my own after that.

Whatever you decide, have fun with it!
