I tried to make some improvements but the drawing and boat anatomy requires a new attempt. I would appreciate suggestions for improvements on my next try. I feel the foreground is too warm and the sky too boring/smooth. Otherwise the corrections needed are those Richard recommended to several of us including like drawing, thinner rigging lines. I like the composition enough to give it another try, first attempt at boats and I like painting them!

Thanks Michael, really appreciate your suggestions. I think that's what bothered me, all cool except foreground...need to add some warmth other places like you suggested. The blue actually wasn't straight from the tube but it does feel that way.
Michael, I'm from Sonora too recently moved to Florida when my husband retired. I have met you at the Mother Lode Art Assoc. events and I was at the Aloft Gallery too. Small world! Isn't this great we can learn from a teacher in New Zealand, really like his work and teaching method. Can't wait to learn and improve my paintings online.

HI Deb.  I think all you need to do is gradate the sky and don't use straight blue out of the tube ....  temper those blues with a little green and/or blues compliment or near compliment.  The sky would gradate from darker/cooler at the top to lighter/warmer as it nears the horizon.  You could also gradate the sky from left to right ..warmer at the left (near the sun) and progress to cooler as you go to the right (away from the sun).  You can also use some broken color effects in the sky with greens and oranges (using the same value as the blue) .. that will give you a more prismatic effect in the sky.  Be sure to paint some warm reflected light up into the shadow side of the boats ... the ground is not to warm in my opinion ... but your shadow under the main boat might be a wee bit to cool ... scrub some warmth into that shadow, especially right under the boat ..leave the edges as they are. Throw some warm reflected light up under the furrowed sails (sic?) ... because warm light hitting the deck of the boat will bounce back up and reflect into an object near by ..like those blue sails. Okay, that's all I got. Happy painting! :)
