I am working through the Chinamen's Bluff workshop and I notice that some of Richard's preliminary sketches are not strictly Notan (light and dark) but include light and medium tone sketching to give a better idea of the overall composition before doing a limited value sketch.  I like this idea but was wondering if this kind of defeats the purpose of Notan.

Yes I probably start with a notan then expand the idea further.
