And here is the opposite of my last painting. Instead of a small, warm, palette knife, horse painting.....here is a cool, large brush, large canvas smooth orca painting.

Thanks for the compliments!  Thomas,  I'm a fast painter. I set aside 2 days to do this in time to be dry for this weekend.  However, I was 95% done in 3 hours.  The last 5 percent was/will be about another 3 hours.  Aside from the splash, it's quite a simple painting.  Things also go faster with few color choices....a pile of UB,  a pile of white, and my favorite, a pile of BS.  ; )  I spent almost as many hours choosing a reference photo, cropping, and planning as I did painting.  BTW, there are only 79 resident killer whales left.  They only live here in the Pacific NW. They feed only on our declining salmon, whereas transient killer whales eat mostly seals and travel as far North as Alaska and as far south as California.

Great Britt! It makes me want to paint a large one too!
Just for interest how long did you take?

Thanks, Michael!  I will do that!  Also, a whale expert gave me a little fix to do as well (since it's her reference photo)!  Tahlequah is a teenage mother female--one of the endangered resident J-pod killer whales up here.  I'm hoping to do some amateur "awareness" work this weekend at an art show with the help of this piece ; ).
