Learning Points:

1. Altering photographic references. I started with a photo ref of the face, they spent about 3 hours searching through images of foxes until I found some I liked, and then spent an our doing rough sketches. It is so easy to paint from a photo, that I could easily get into the habit, especially trying to do so many this year, and am already behind 4 paintings.

2. Layering wet on wet. I used a really stiff brush for an underpainting, and put just enough to cover the white and pressed it into the canvas. Then a light touch with a stiff brush, and then some blending with a soft one.

3. Edges and fur. I wanted it to look like the light was shining through the fur. I painting the background just up to the edges of the fox. then "outlined with a lighter color, and blended.

4. Realistic eyes. I had the light source coming from the left, so I used a lighter color in the lower right part of the eye, and I also put a darker shade just under the top eyelid for the shadow.

5. Whiskers; I used a very stiff brush; flat
