Good point, Lynn.  I will admit that I wasn't thinking about lighting at all, just copying Richard's painting. The light is obviously coming from the upper left, but it's hard to capture.  The photo is confusing, and my oil painting is all over the place.

Seems watercolor would be even more challenging. A good start but you seems to be having the same problem I do with the lighting.

This is a preliminary version in water-colour and coloured pencil - just trying to get my head around it now, after a truly depressing first try.

I've been trying to edit this to resemble the original (cropping, saturation etc) but the photo editor isn't working for me.  I wasn't even able to crop, and when I select any action, crop is the only one that comes up.  Anyone have a solution?
