Yeah, the balance between doing studies (to get things 'sorted') and set pieces (where you can easily lose the spontaneity) is a hard one!

I think this one is more subtle and atmospheric - tho' the other version is nice too!

Thank you everyone! So many great comments on these two paintings. I am so pleased with my results but I do agree with Candi and Jon that I prefer this one. It is very difficult to copy exactly what you paint on a study which I tried to do. I think this one came out better because I had painted the larger canvas first with acrylic to get my underpainting done in the right values as well as conserve oil paint. To keep the wet in wet technique I was able to do one section at a time but the ocean behind the dunes was dry acrylic and I did nothing to that in oils so it was harder to get a soft edge on my dune grasses without repainting the water in oils so I opted for a more defined grass with a higher contrast effect.
