This is acrylic on board . We have a lot of salt marshes on our coastline with deep channels where the boats can sail through at high tide. It looks very surreal at times, suddenly seeing yacht sails in the distance but not seeing the water.
I've been away a while.a bad year for artistic inspiration but I'm looking forward to being a contributor to this lovely site again :)

Thank you very much Charles. Your comments came just at the right time. I've been struggling with an oil painting this afternoon and it will not go according to my plan at all. :)

Beautiful use of value and color.  Nice composition.

No probs Michael!
Ana thank you for your nice comment. I love using pastels . As for the palette I only used a limited one of just5 colours.

I like your atmospheric perception and I like your palette. You almost tricked me into believe that you worked in pastel by the softness in the blending.

Whew! ..  Thanks Sarah! ...   I was afraid I was getting a little over bearing in my critique ..  I really do not want to do that.  Anyway, great painting and welcome back to the site! :)

Michael, thank you so much for taking the time to critique my painting and for all the lovely positive comments. In the past I have held your feedback in high esteem as I do now. In fact, I agree with you, looking at it again ....I shall have to add a line of blue as it looks as if the sail is crawling over the ground.LOL!
The trouble is with me is that whenever I want to change a slight bit of a painting I find that I cannot stop and I end up with a totally different painting. Wish me luck!!!

Sarah, Very nice composition and movement through the painting.  Good illusion of depth by your handling of overlapping, size relationships, value, edges, and color ....  you covered all of the visual clues to enhance that illusion .. excellent.  A wonderful painting .. I like how you have distributed the colors throughout your painting, unifying the painting very well.  Having said that, Sarah, I really think that you need to show some water along the horizon ... you must give us the illusion that the sailboat is in water, not sitting on the land.  The only reason we know what is happening, is that you told us.  When you were seeing this, it made sense to you because you were there ... and while it IS pretty cool (the red sail coming up like that) ...  you might be asking too much of us viewers to understand what is actually going on.  An analogy of this might be .. if you saw a person standing on a rock that was submerged a few inches below the water, and you wanted to paint this person .. it would obviously look like he/she was standing on the water.  You would then need to explain to every viewer that the person was standing on a submerged rock ...  no matter how you explain it, we would still "sense" something is wrong.  Having said all that, it is a very well executed painting! :)

Thank you for your comments Jon. I have spent the morning walking the dogs by our nearest creek and it was high tide. Lots of boats and yachts were sailing up the channels. So much to take in but great fun.
