Your watercolors are inspiring, so I can't wait for you to get back into oils. I'm sure you'll bring a fresh eye to an old medium. The lake will be a good choice. It's rich and dense, and a lot of opportunity to work with the deep contrasts that you like and lots of hard and lost edges. Go for it!

I used to smoke. Funny, when I cracked open my old oils after decades away, and the smell hit me, the first thing that I wanted to do was light a cigarette. I resisted. Old habits die hard...
Sometimes simplifying is a good idea. At least it allows you to tackle something that you might otherwise not have tried to paint. Plus it's a good learning experience too. :-)
