Watercolor, 9" by 12", Fluid 100 cold pressed paper. I tried to paint this baby blue and white 1953 Chevrolet 2 door sedan when I saw it parked right where I was going to paint in watercolors 2 weeks ago in Grafton, WI, but just as I started to sketch it on my paper, the owner took off in it. I painted it the other day from my photos and pretty much made up the background for it.

Here are the two watercolors with mine above and Erin Blum's below.  Notice that she signed hers and I didn't sign mine.  I named mine "House on fire" because I spent quite awhile trying to get that black cloud above the roof peak out by wetting and blotting the paper, and Erin spent some time on it as well after we came inside and she took out some excess color in the rest of the painting to show me how it's done.  Her comment on the painting was that it was a pretty good start, but that it "looked like it was painted by an oil painter".   I haven't gotten any comment back from her yet on what she thinks of my 53 Chevy painting, but I should probably expect the same comments.   Notice her brush work and the looseness in this painting as well as some critical detail at the focal point.   So, like I said, my water colors are a work in progress.  Learning how to remove color and avoiding staining colors at the start and avoiding mud like my "smoke" coming out the roof are just some of the technical challenges that I will need to master!!!!  WIP, for sure!!

Thanks Laura, Candi, Susan, Montalvo and Jon! Notice that I have not shown you my many failures in water colors! It is not a new medium for me; I just don't paint in water colors very often and have never taken a water color class or workshop. I am just fine with the colors and color mixing and know how to do washes, glazes and dry brush applications. My friend, Erin Blum, just gave me a one day nuts and bolts one on one tutorial with a demo in Grafton, WI. We were both going to paint that car when the owner took off in it and painted a building instead. Just so you don't all think that I am an accomplished water color artist, I'm going to post my water color painting and hers for you to see! She teaches plein air watercolor workshops in Wisconsin and is a terrific water media artist; she is just starting to paint in oils again. So this is really a work in progress. I really want to improve my water colors and learn to journal in pen & ink with water color washes because of it's portability when traveling.

New medium and difficult subject - you've got it to work well, hats off to you, Stud

This is really nice Stuart. Wow! The reflections are awesome. Not to much detail in the background, but enough to know whats there, which is a plus because it brings me back to this beauty of a car.
