Fabulous piece Thomas.  Very intimate and active with a great color palette.

Candi, i just posted an old painting here from January where i explain my experiences with the water solubles. As far as i remember Richard uses alkyd-based paints. I know nothing about those.
I find the color harmony up there just amazing... Wood and stones in orange...yet looking so real!

Thomas Ruckstuhl, just curious why you don't like Water Soluble Oils, doesn't Richard use them?  What do you use?

Great painting Thomas!

Hmmm.... so the palette's the secret ... My palette's generally smaller than 15x 20 cm (approx 6x8 in)... and I recycle supermarket polystrene trays for that purpose....... NOW I KNOW what I am doing incorrectly....!!! :) :P :D !!! I should do sth about my palette size!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot for sharing technical secrets in detail! Important hints towards larger. I use a french easel and wooden palette somewhat larger than half size of yours. Guess i need get rid of all that soon and go for something more rigit and practical. Again, thanks a lot Tomas!
Candi,. Plexi glass is resistant to turpentine... i clean my studio glass palette with sunflower oil.
I wonder why anyone still uses Water Soluble Oils? (I do not use terpentine or anything that stinks, neither for painting nor cleaning)

Thomas Ruckstuhl thanks for asking about the palette, and thanks Thomas Wezwick for answering!  I just received my Monet  French easel (inspired by all of you plein air painters, wanting to get outside), and was wondering about the included palette. I came in to start a blog question about palettes.  I've just been using palette paper for the workshops and usually run out of space!  I'm using Water Soluble Oils, and wondering what you clean your plexi glass palette with Thomas, turpentine?

Hey Thomas........I deleted some of my remarks....( Long Winded)....So I guess I could have just said ....A large palette is key........Nothing worse than running out of room, and paint.....then trying to mix lots of good clean color.....in the corners of a small palette, with no room or fresh paint........

Hi Thomas.....Thanks ..and thats a good question.......I have a large piece of plexi glass.....Maybe ,,2 foot by 1 .foot....So with my limited palette....I lay out my colors...Then I try to keep all those darks very thin....as we all probably do......Mostly I mix my colors pretty much in one area...all colors ...getting a little bit of the others......Then once I need some thick ..accent,or light ....Thats near the last third of the painting , A large palette is the key.......I could never do this with a standard size ...That comes with a french easel..........I love my yarka, easel, because it has metal legs underneath the box, This can support quite a bit of weight without collapsing....as this has happened with my french easels, with legs on the side.....
