oil on textured panel, 11' by 14", plein air. This was the week before the Portola Gallery painting. Some of my shapes of the buildings were off on their perspective, so a little more studio work than usual was needed after the plein air session. Message to self is: "Get you sketch on canvas right before applying a lot of paint; details aren't as important as getting the shapes right!"

Thanks Jon!! I seem to like busy scenes that are hard to simplify. I have been using a relatively detailed under painting in raw umber iwhen doing plein air urban scenes like this on a regular basis, but sometimes in the eagerness to get some color on the canvas, I proceed without checking over my drawing and making corrections. This was one of those times, so my values were Ok from the start, but the perspective in my drawing was off.

It's quite 'busy' - but I finfd that works well here - it feels exuberent! The lesson about the shapes first is a good one!

Thanks Laura! I guess I like the challenge. Maybe I'll finally learn to get my drawing right before putting a lot of paint on!!

Stu, you always pick most complex scene to yourself. Yes, the perspective is very important. You did right here. Beautiful colors. Good job!
