Thanks Britt. I don't go to that Starbucks because too many unkempt and unsavory characters hang out there, but it adds a lot of reality to the painting. Some of my best photo references are shot from my car; very easy with a point and shoot camera. Stu

Hi, Stu!

I have this sudden and urgent need to paint a cute old car, so I went hunting for a reference photo.  I didn't find one, but I came upon this painting of yours, and I just love it!  Caryl, my advice is skip the Starbucks if you do come back, and go for a non-chain coffee shop with a little more heart and a lot less corporate!  They are darn inviting looking, though!

I still have yet to find a painting that fascinates me as much as this one does. Oh how I love all the lights. The Starbucks shop is so inviting. I have never had a Starbucks coffee but if I ever went overseas again I would have to give them a try. Where is this painting now? I hope you kept it in your private collection.

Jen, thanks. I shot my photo reference for this painting through the windshield of my car. Similar to this with another reference photo shot through my windshield is "Early Spring Rain" posted on this site. I do have another as well that I am just finishing of a sunrise; I will post this later this week. I keep a point and shoot digital camera in my car to take advantage of interesting scenery I encounter. I commute about 15 miles each way across the SF bay on a bridge from my home to my medical practice. In the morning, I head East, into the sunrise and in the evening back West into the sunset; carrying this camera and shooting from my car has given me an incredible collection of sunset and sunrise photos and also some interesting street scenes. Although I paint plein air as much as I can, the digital camera is really unmatched for capturing that special moment. The digital SLR cameras are a little too heavy for this, but the ubiquitous little pocket cameras are incredible. I have a little Samsung 12 megapixel camera; I bought it several years ago after my Nikon DSLR was stolen. Thanks for your compliments. Stu

Stu, just revisited this work.   It is so good. The feeling of the painting, with the colours, the lights on trees and shops and cars.   I do like this very much.  Feel as though am following behind the car in front and travelling down the street.  Any more like this?

Caryl, Thanks.  The little lights are on the trees year around, but they only show up when the trees are bare in the winter.  I shot my reference photo through my car windshield.  The little lights are just dabs of white in the center of some warm yellow.    Stu
