In Chinese and Japanese art the calligraphy is also an art form, and it is traditional to add a poem or 'haiku' which is appropriate to the theme of the painting. The following website explains it

This painting has Japanese Kanji calligraphy. I have books of Chinese poems and sayings which I choose to add to my paintings. George

Pretty, but George, I need for you to help me understand this art.  What does the lettering stand for?  What is the meaning of always adding this lettering to the Chinese art?   I am trying to understand to have a greater appreciation.  Roena
