Hi Laura in this part of the world people cut ice from lakes during the winter and packed it away covered in sawdust , in houses (sheds) like this. They used the ice then in the warm weather to keep their food stuffs , this of course all before electricity made it into rural areas. Canada is a vast land with a relatively small population , so many areas had little or no hydro service for many years. This shed is on my brother in-laws cottage property , it is ready to fall down , but it has some great character lines.
