I just bought Richard's video on "Mastering Color" and doing some of the excellent exercises! This is one of Eric Bowman's paintings I am playing around with.

Thanks, that helps. So you mean Ch 7 on the Master Color DVD.

Hi Liz, Start from the beginning.

1.  Do your own 9 value scale in black and white.

2.  I then set up some colored blocks under a light (like a still life setup) and paint them in black and white.  I asked a person that do woodwork to cut me some and then I paint them with acrylic paint all sorts of colors.  Use the value viewer (The Ultimate Painters' Tool) to compare light and dark values.  It is much easier to make comparisons thru that little hole.

3.  I haven't done the other exercises yet, but start with chapter 7 again to see what other three color combinations I can come up with.  Just paint a little easy painting in the colors Richards did his small paintings with.  Don't copy his little paintings.  Do you own painting, otherwise you will not learn to make your own decisions.

Hope that help and gets you going.

I bought Richards DVD's, Master Class and Mastering Color. I am not sure witch one I should start with first.
Any advice?

Thank you.  It is a very nice DVD with lots of exercises.  I am definitely going to do some of the others as well.  Interesting how little color and values you can use to do a nice painting.

I got that video some time back - maybe I should revise it - looks like an interesting exercise!
