Portrait of my grandson after the photo

This is the photo I made in 2010 with my grandson on Javea ( Spain) beach and I like it so much so that I decided to start my portrait painting with it. Hope you will send critiques which could help me to develop this genre further.

Thank you very much Travor, I will not touch it. It is already hanged on the wall. George

I find it beautiful as it is, with its own charm, why seek to change it?

I always avoided painting portraits. This genre can be difficult even for experienced artists. But eventually I started with my grandson portrait after a long time spent reading and watching to demos. The most aspect I was afraid of was the likeness and expression of the face. So my attention was always there. Human and figurative are very sensitive to errors, which makes the work a disaster. A portrait must be closed to perfection. The beauty of oil colours is that you can make corrections after they dry. My first portrait was made in about three weeks……..Happy painting! George

Don't know who is Bupe but the portrait is amaizing. And much more; it is made in watercolours which to me is one of the most difficult madium for details and colour mix. Congratulation Pauline! You did a very good job here. I am now studying the watercolor medium since few days in order to try teaching my grandson to paint. If new painting will come on my imagination will send it first to you and only after taht will upload it. Happy painting! George

Hi George,  how's the portrait painting going?  i Have uploaded the photo of Bupe which i followed for her portrait. I hadn't looked at it for some time and was surprised by the intensity of colour in the painting.  I am trying to get back to some portrait painting myself.  I am using watercolours at the moment and look forward to trying them out in portraiture. Happy painting! :-)) Pauline

Dear Pauline,

Your comments make me happy and encourage me to continue to paint portraits and figurative genre. I am now collecting lots of information and demos about portrait painting. It is fabulous to note all quotes similar to the one you mentioned. I took a look again to yours and I like them all but my favourite are Katie and Olivia. Did you painted more than uploaded here? I am curious to see also the original photos. Thanks for sharing your ideas with me Yours, George

Hi George, lovely painting of your Grandson.  You have achieved a beautiful youthfulness and transparency of skin tone required in a child's portrait plus the eyes are beautiful, which is most important, as they are the windows to the soul.......John Singer Sargent once said and i quote 'a portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth'.  I think what he was saying for me was that you need to portray every single  features measurement, shape, a quirky glance, a tilt of the head, an emotion, the individuals personality all wrapped up within the image you see before you.......You have made a good start. Good luck and happy portrait painting! Pauline :-)
