Like the sketchiness of the background and foreground, reinforces the focus on the seagull and helps suggest that it's watching you and ready to take off if you come closer. Like the painting of the beak, it's highlight and shadow, and the warm shade on the underbelly.
Quite often a sketch has more immediacy and charm than a fully finished painting. Well done Richard.

love it. I like the way you do some paintings as it gives me ideas on things to paint. love seagulls and this is a nice painting - who would have thought to do one just like this....simple yet beautiful at the same time. Its just the beach and birds, quiet and free. love it.
