Hi Abdiel,
Glad to hear from you. I, too, am struggling with values. My biggest mistake which is that I fail to give the far horizon sufficient distinction to push it into the distance. Perhaps that is why I noticed it on your painting. Altogether though, love this painting. Cheers. Gina.
Gina you are right about the value in that portion of the painting as I am just beginning to understand how to work with values all over my work. After this painting was dry I found that same mistake but refused to change it because want my work to be alla prima. The main thing I wanted to achieve with this piece was creating that sense of mystery with the brushstrokes. Overall happy with the outcome but really looking to improve this technique :)
I really like this subject too, Abdiel. You've given it a very misty quality. I like the vertical strokes at the lower base of the rock. Is it water falling from the rocks? Rain splashing up? So many questions are raised. It draws the viewer in. One technical question though ... the upright girder (?) of the bridge .... should it be a touch paler to fade into the the background? To me, viewing it on my laptop monitor, the values appear too close to those on the rock. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Art for me is a matter of taste and preference. I love this painting, but then I like loose lines with little definition.
Thanks Dorian :)
Smiles coming your way! : ))
Thanks Linda! Brushwork was my main focus on this one
This is my take on workshop 22. The photo looks bluer than the original (this is just a photo from my phone). The shadow side of the rock is actually close to neutral gray and the bridge is a warmer grey.
Very nice Abdiel Great brushwork and colors!
