Thanks - nice - I didn't know her - her piece 'Caught in old Havana' is really lovely.

I learned of it from reading Doug Braithwaite's blog, it's true that there are a lot of block-in possibilities - the problem is maybe more the middle stage :(

I cannot remember.  I am doing it for a very long time on and off.  I find it an easy color for underpainting.  You can go towards more blue (adding Ultramarine Blue) if you need or red (adding Alizarin Crimson) if you want to go towards red purple for green landscapes or seascapes.  I think it really brightens a painting.  But I would like to experiment more with underpainting.  I study some of Shelby Keefe underpaintings.  Where she used warm colors, she paint a cool underpainting and visa versa.  She really goes wild with her underpaintings.

Interesting! - where did you get the idea for a purple block-in?

Thank you.  Yes, I paint the undercoat purple.  I find purple an easy "happy" color to use as an undercoat.  Purple brightens any scene.  No, Jon, it is not my backyard.  Just someone in our town's backyard.  I was drawn to all the shapes and her washing on the line also gives it a bit more color.  I Googled JC Quilici paintings.  He uses really bright colors.  I like his Club Mykonos scenes.

love the way you have handled this really interesting subject :)

Love it, Aurelia - absolutely - in a style that reminds me (with no disadvantage to you whatsover!) of one of my all-time favorite painters JC Quilici. With paint handling/application and color like that, I just say 'yum'. Is it your/a local backyard?

Really interesting, Aurelia; beautiful shapes & colour - did you paint an undercoat of purple, a là Sorolla?
