Regarding the Boatyard, I will let you into my world of painting. Firstly I always know how I want the end painting to turn out..Light, dark ,moody, etc, once I have this in mind then I paint it fairly quickly ( 3 / 4 hours max) I'm a great believer that once you know the direction then go for it ..mind you some come out well and others are destined to the bin.
You are right.... my drawings are paramount to the success of the finished artwork. (scale and perspective are the key words, everything else you can pretty much well get away with) Most of my art is based on an rough / accurate portrayal then I fairly much destroy the realism with impressionism.!!!
