Painting Southern Light

Had a day to spend in town today so took my paints with me, set up early and painted this beautiful old concrete boat in the Whangarei Town Basin. Apparently it was used in the movie 'mutiny on the bounty' years ago. I loved the shape and the…

Moving The Muse

Moving the muse.

What do you do when you feel like the muses have deserted you and your inspiration has left for parts unknown?

Someone wrote to me recently who was facing this problem. I’m not an expert, but it got me thinking about the subject.

What to do may depend a little…

Hello friends,

USA is in the grips of the cold weather. Hence, this painting. However, we have had a very beautiful, few days in Texas.

This painting was done on a very cheap gessoed cloth surface made by Masters touch. Traditional oils are very easy to lay down on pretty much any surface. Any and all feed back are…

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the complete artist.  My name is Ramari and I live in Warkworth NZ. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please critique my latest painting.  This is a Manaia painted in oils, I have attempted to make the colours resemble those of a New Zealand paua.  I have not had any art instruction through my life but love to paint, I design any…

Painting #3: A Basket

I did this on the Raymar Linen Panle 6"x8".  This was done totally in traditional oil.  I have to admit Traditional oil are much easier to handle, especially if you are new to painting.  I took the above picture using my iPhone.  Any and all feedback are welcome… Thanks!  Please do visit my blog to see other paintings of mine:…

FIND COLOURS IN PHOTOS for your main paint colours/values. Fantastic tool to use.

Rainy days and dark, cannot paint, instead - sorting/deleting pc bookmarks/favourties.

Found this excellent link I kept, and thought may be of interest. This is a colour site, which breaks down the colours in a photograph, much like the latest of Richards workshops for different values of colours.Really superb tool to use.  Excellent for those wishing to pick out various colours in your photographs in minute as well as large scale.…

Happy New Year!!!!!

Hello All,

I have been painting in Water Soluble Oil (WSO) for a while.  However I have started experimenting with Traditional Oil (TO) and it is a lot easier to use than the WSO.  The TO does not fall apart when thinning with Turps/spirits.  WSO tends to loose it's sticking power to the canvas if you over use the water…
