I started off today in the studio but the fumes forced me outside after a couple of hours. So here's the painting in the carport after a day spent on the mist and the midground landscape. Actually I spent about another hour on it after this photo was taken. A very satisfying day's work - nothing went horribly wrong and I managed to stay in the 'flow' or the 'zone' for much of the day. Much nicer without the fumes clogging my brain.

Here's an email Claire sent me about the progress on her commission:
(Thought it might be interesting to show you - and yes I did ask first.)
- Nice when you get a happy customer when you're only halfway through the painting.

Hi Richard,

We were very excited looking at Day 3's effort. We can recognise "our painting" now and Simon is right, the depth is amazing and the mid ground colours and detail are great. We knew absolutely nothing about painting before, so being able to watch it come together is a real bonus, the painstaking effort involved is a real eye-opener. You are doing a wonderful job, thank you! :-) :-)

Good" Luck" with the foreground (Day 4?) - though there seems to me that it's a lot of hard work & talent rather than luck at play here.

Looking forward to the next instalment!

Best wishes,
Claire.

Thanks Simon, I'm pretty happy with it too so far. The foreground trees are going to be the really tricky part I think, so I'm hoping that will go as smoothly as this midground section did. Nice to be compared to Streeton! Took a trip to Melbourne last year to see his work in the Australian Impressionists exhibition - got to see the progression of his work and his contemporaries - very exciting stuff. One similarity I noticed (and really liked) between them was the use of contrast between large blocks of colour with broad brushwork counterpointed by fine sharp details in the foreground - really tied the painting together. Getting there slowly eh. Will post more photos as it goes. Cheers, Richard.
