"Sunset Dunes" 10x8" Oil on Board
 SOLD

Yesterday evening I took a jaunt down the back of the dunes and set up to try to capture the fleeting colours of sunset. Gotta be quick! You don't realize just how guick you have to be until you try it. Anyway I was really trying to push the colours around and create something of a warm glow from the right. Might have gone a bit too far eh? :-) Never mind - all good fun. I'm starting to think about what I'm going to teach on stage at the Plein Air Painting Convention next April in Las Vegas. I figure it's better to over-prepare than under-prepare for something like that. Thought something on different light effects might be interesting - but I feel about 20 years behind most of the painters teaching there, so I'm getting the heebiejeebies a bit. Should be fine. :-/

Oh here's something interesting I did yesterday in the golden hour - photographed the opposite side of the sky in a mirror to make a comparison. See the colour difference between the reflection and the sky behind it? Interesting eh? Much warmer and lighter closer to the sun. I'd be using a pthalo blue for the sky in the mirror and an ultramarine blue and alizarine crimson for the other (or something like that).

Richard, what I love about your paintings is the simplicity of the brush strokes and the emotions they are able to convey. I can feel the warmth of the day but at the same time I can feel the threatening clouds overhead. Maybe I'm just a romantic fool at heart but I love paintings that evoke emotions and feelings. I do paint and I would love to get away from the details that I feel compelled to add to my paintings.

:-) Many thanks Marilyn. Don't know how Sergei would feel about that if he was still with us but hey I'll take the compliment and I appreciate your kind offer too. If you wouldn't mind sending me an email I'd love to add you to my list of global friends I can go painting with (it's getting quite long now which is nice!).

All the best,

Richard

Such a beauty of a painting, your colors remind me of Sergei Bongart, a Russian painter. I could not dowload that video. To bad. I sure enjoyed the brushwork also. When you go to Las Vegas, if you and your family ever want to come to Canada around Ottawa, the Capital, my husband and I could put you up and bring you to paint in wonderfull places.
