"Camping, Shelly Bay" 8x12" Oil on Canvas by Richard Robinson

Had a really nice day today painting here with Nancy Lennie who was over from Hawaii. This secluded spot is just over the hill from Waipu Cove. This painting was a real struggle (well, more so than usual) because of the flat lighting, challenging me to invent all sorts of shadows and variations to make the painting more captivating. My light and colour concept was basically a spotlight on the beach and lower hill, darkening the top of the hill and graying the sky and also casting a soft shadow across the foreground. The blue tent was actually there but I just moved it into the scene to add to the narrative and fill that somewhat empty grassy space.

Really enjoying my spotlights at the moment - learning (again) about warming and lightening the shadows in the spotlit area to create a warm glowing effect. Yummy.
