OK - go for it - sometimes "repeats" are better, sometimes worse - I love re-trying the same painting! - it's instructive in any case...

Re the framed painting -well, if your daughter wants one - you'll just have to get to work :)!! It is a lot of work, too!!!

Hi Ro. I just used a big cardboard box! - Painted it black, & cut out windows for the light, & made the flap at the front. it worked perfectly, & was free. I also cut windows the the light, in the side walls, to experiment with different lighting. i ended up preferring the side lighting. My bulbs were/are small! It took me 6 months to set up my studio! It was like walking into another world, once it was set up! I had black curtains hanging from the ceiling to the floor! It was my sacred space. But quite a few people couldn't go in the cos it was too outrageous & 'witchy'. Lol. I loved that, cos it made it 'my' space even more! Lol.

Hi Ro, great to be in touch again. I've gotta get up & go to work now, but I just saw your comment & have to answer right away. Fingers crossed with your paintings too, by the way.
Yes I sure do know The Carder Method! That's the method I used to paint Asian Still Life! It took me 6 months to set up my studio with the black curtains, lights & light box! But worth it with the comments I got on the site, including one from Mark himself! It's a great process, & I followed it to the letter. I watched the DVD when I went to bed, every night for about a year. I soaked it up like a sponge. It's very common sense. I couldn't recommend it more. I just love how Mark is so laid back & has simplified his process as much as he can. There was so much for me to take in at first, as I'd never done anything like it. I found the whole thing magical, & certainly look forward to doing TCM as soon as I'm not sharing house and I don't have to worry about the smell : )

Hi Roena, I see the transition dots...cool. Glad you are safe and sound at the daughter's. Sorry you have been put to work (lol) can't remember how long to stay with them but after completing that large canvas, and spending time with someone else's routine you and hubby will undoubtedly enjoy getting back on the road once more. Enjoy your family, the holidays and plan all those lovely painting while you are away from your brush!

Hi Ro.  It does not matter how  "far away" the sun is that you are viewing.  I put that in quotes because the sun is 93, 000,000 (million) miles away.  The sun setting on the pacific ocean, looks the same to someone in New York watching the same sun setting on Lake George...(just 3 hours earlier though).  So that part is not problematic. Now what happens is that on the horizon, the glare of the sun seem to spread out across the horizon ..as the light comes forward, the glare dissipates, and a more narrow path of light is observed....as far as the glare is concerned.  The actual path of sparkly light, will be about the same through out the path of light.

Thanks Ro - I originally put some yellow on that wall facing the sun . . . but then as I shaded it it kind of got lost - I'll touch it up a bit, and do a few more things, before I give it to my brother.

I found it extemely difficult to do the voting!  It would really be nice if it were set up in a way where you could just click next and work through them.  I would go to a painting, and then when I hit the back arrow the order of the paintings in the gallery would have changed.  I'm noticing that not many have voted sofar . . . and I imagine that has a lot to do with it.

Thank you for all your encouragement, Ro.  I know I have come a long ways since I really started painting 7 years ago . . . and I have a lot more confidence . . . but there are those days when the negative voices crop up.  Painting is just such a wonderful adventure.  May we continue til the end of our days, always improving, stretching and growing.

Thankyou for your friendship Roena. And thank you too for your kind comments. I feel quite overwhelmed by the encouragement from so many good artists like yourself on this site and since joining have had a real shot in the arm. I'm starting to gain some confidence and enjoying painting again !

HI Roena - finally got my workshop25 paintings posted - BOY have I been stressed about these sunset paintings!  When I am doing my portraits, which is mostly what I do - I'm always super focused on detail - and though I love impressionist type paintings, I've not really done one.  I definitely need to do more practice at loosening up!  Had a great deal of difficulty photographing them as well.  Finally got some photos without glare . . . and then when I loaded them up to the computer, the color seemed off.  I adjusted them the best I could.  As I'm typing, I'm watching your gorgeous slide show roll past.  You have some really wonderful paintings in your gallery.

Thanks, Ro, for the tip to the book.

I'll give you a link to browse to get some insight into my misnomer of American Realist painting. My typing jumped ahead of my knowledge, so the people I'm talking about aren't part of the 'American Realist' movement, but are more 'Realist Painters of the American West.'

Here's the link.

It's an Auction Catalog site. The wonderful thing is if you click through to the paintings and then click on 'view large image', you really do get a beautifully detailed high definition image. For an artist, really worth it.

Hi Ro,

In answer to your question regarding Edgar Payne's book... Nope, I don't own it. To be honest, when I followed up Jan's comment I hadn't heard of Edgar Payne at all. I do live far far away from the American West :-) The truth is that I am discovering a whole bunch of America Realist painters who are simply wonderful. I'll look out for the book.

That's my way of painting too pre-mxing. Pre-mexing is in my opinion crucial if one doesn't want to go muddy and massy if it is not experienced and has time for painting only in weekends and only in some time intervals of the weekends. And has no his own studio but a corner in the apartment which should be cleaned after evry session........ so that wife is satisfied.
